Why Choose Henley-on-Thames Decorators

Breathable Coating Specialists

Remenham Lane and Sonning Eye properties sit in a persistent Thames microclimate. We specify breathable systems on every lime-render and riverside-facing elevation, not standard masonry paint.

Conservation-Area Familiarity

We work regularly on Hart Street and Bell Street properties in the Henley conservation area. External colour changes on listed buildings require consent, and we advise on this before any colour is confirmed.

Fully Insured

Full public liability cover on every external job, including scaffolded access on taller Edwardian villas across RG9.

Sash Prep Included

Every sash window gets bead-channel preparation and a full travel check before topcoat. This is standard, not an optional extra.

### Masonry and Rendered Walls

The Henley conservation area is predominantly brick-built with lime render on the older facades. Lime render is a breathable surface that manages moisture by allowing it to pass through rather than pooling behind a surface coating. Film-forming masonry paint seals this pathway and causes delamination within two to three seasons as trapped moisture expands and contracts with temperature changes.

We specify breathable masonry coatings on all lime render and conservation-area facades. On Chiltern brick-and-flint stock in Hambleden and across the plateau, the same principle applies: lime mortar throughout, no film-forming products.

For a detailed breakdown of masonry-only projects, see our masonry painting page.

Sash Windows and Exterior Timber

Sash windows are near-universal on period properties throughout Henley town centre, Remenham, and Sonning Eye. Decades of repainting around the bead channels causes sashes to bind. When a decorator paints over this build-up rather than addressing it, the fresh topcoat is damaged immediately when the sash is forced open.

Correct preparation works the paint back from the parting bead and staff bead channels. The sash is then run through its full travel before the final coat is applied. For full bead-channel depth and Victorian townhouse sash repaint detail, see our window frame painting page.

Fascias, Soffits, and Barge Boards

Timber fascias and soffits on Edwardian and 1920s properties throughout Shiplake have typically accumulated multiple paint layers. Where build-up is significant, we assess adhesion before deciding whether to strip or key the existing coats. Applying another coat over a failing stack extends its life by one season, not seven.

uPVC fascias can be repainted with a specialist adhesion primer. We inspect condition before recommending painting. Where uPVC has become brittle or cracked, replacement is better value than painting.

Front Door and Porch

Original timber front doors on the terraces of Hart Street and Bell Street carry high pedestrian visibility in a conservation streetscape. Repeated painting without stripping causes paint build-up across panel edges and moulding profiles, blunting the original geometry. Preparation at the recessed panel areas is the work; a brush-over of accumulated layers is not preparation.

Colour changes on doors within the Henley conservation area may require listed-building consent or permitted development approval. We advise on this at the quotation stage. For the full front door detail, see our front door painting page.

Garden Rooms and Outbuildings

Large detached properties in Shiplake have extensive exterior timber across a single maintenance programme. Fascias, barge boards, garage doors, garden room cladding, pergola structures, and gate posts all benefit from coordinating on a single planned visit.

Riverside outbuildings in Remenham and Lower Shiplake sit in persistently damp conditions. A moisture check before application is standard on all riverside outbuildings. For garden fencing and shed painting, see our fence painting and shed painting pages.

Riverside and Thames-Bank Elevations

Properties along Remenham Lane and in Sonning Eye village face persistently higher ambient moisture from the Thames corridor. Solvent-based primers or standard acrylic masonry paint applied to original lime render on these buildings trap moisture and blister within two to three seasons. Breathable systems are the required choice on all riverside stock, and we specify accordingly on every riverside project we take on. For full detail on lime plaster, sash bead-channel preparation, and conservation-area heritage finishes, see our period property painting page.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site assessment and substrate identification

We inspect every external surface. We identify render type (lime, sand and cement, or modern proprietary), note existing coating condition, look for biological growth, and check timber for rot or delamination. There is no universal exterior paint; the system follows the substrate.

2. Biological growth treatment

Moss, algae, and lichen on north and west-facing elevations are treated with a biocide wash before any surface work. This is common on Chiltern escarpment properties in Nettlebed and on shaded elevations throughout the catchment. Painting over biological growth seals it in, and it returns through the new coat within one growing season.

3. Surface preparation

Render is assessed for hollow sections, structural cracks, and failing areas. Loose material is removed and made good before painting. Timber is stripped to sound material where necessary. Failing paint layers on joinery are removed rather than overcoated.

4. Priming

Each surface type receives the correct primer. Bare timber gets an exterior timber primer. Masonry and lime render get a breathable masonry primer. Mixed-surface properties receive two primer systems applied to the correct zones.

5. Topcoat application

We monitor conditions and do not apply coatings ahead of rain or when temperatures fall below 5 degrees Celsius. Two finish coats are standard. High-exposure riverside-facing elevations receive a third coat where product guidance supports it.

6. Sash window completion and sign-off

After topcoat, every sash is run through its full travel and checked to operate freely before we leave. We walk through the finished work with you before closing the job.

Surface area and access

A riverside detached villa in Remenham with four elevations and outbuildings costs significantly more than a two-elevation terrace on a central Henley street. Access requirements increase with building height and roof complexity.

Timber load

Properties with extensive original sash windows, garden rooms, fascias, and outbuilding joinery have a substantially higher timber preparation requirement than a property with few external timber elements. Sash bead-channel preparation adds time that is not visible from the street.

Coating system

Breathable masonry coatings cost more per litre than standard masonry paint and require longer application windows. On lime render and Chiltern brick-and-flint, they are not optional; they are the only system compatible with the surface.
