Masonry painting in Henley-on-Thames by Henley-on-Thames Decorators

Henley-on-Thames Decorators provide masonry painting covering rendered walls, brick, and stone facades across the RG9 catchment. We specialise in breathable coating systems on lime render and Chiltern brick-and-flint, where standard masonry paint fails.

  • Rendered and bare-masonry walls, including lime render on conservation-area facades
  • Biological growth treatment: algae, moss, and lichen on north and shaded elevations
  • Structural crack assessment and lime-compatible repair before any coating is applied
  • Render-only programmes where joinery is out of scope

Brick-and-flint cottages in Hambleden and lime-rendered Georgian townhouses in central Henley are the most demanding masonry surfaces in the catchment. We identify the surface first and specify the product second — the reverse order is how masonry coatings fail.

Why Choose Henley-on-Thames Decorators

Lime-Compatible Specialists

Henley town centre, Hambleden, and Nettlebed all carry lime render and lime mortar throughout. Applying the wrong product here causes delamination — we understand the substrate before we specify.

Clear Pricing

Fixed price from the first quote. No unexpected additions once work starts.

Fully Insured

Full public liability cover on every job across the RG9 catchment.

Highly Recommended

Most of our masonry work comes from repeat clients and referrals across the Henley catchment.

Masonry Painting Services

We cover lime render, brick-and-flint, biological growth treatment, hollow-section repair, and render-only programmes — substrate-led specification in every case.

Lime Render on Conservation Area and Chiltern Properties

Lime render on conservation area facades and Chiltern brick-and-flint requires a breathable, vapour-permeable masonry coating. Standard film-forming products are incompatible with these substrates and cause coating failure.

We identify the surface at the site visit and specify the correct product from there. For the full substrate and consent picture on period properties, see our period property painting page.

Biological Growth: Algae, Moss, and Lichen

North-facing and shaded elevations across the catchment develop biological growth. In Nettlebed and Harpsden, where overhanging tree canopy keeps shaded faces damp, algae and moss growth can be dense.

Painting over biological growth seals it in. It returns through the new coating within one growing season. The correct sequence is biocide wash, adequate dwell time to kill growth to the root, pressure clean, then surface preparation.

Hollow Sections, Structural Cracks, and Render Repair

Render that sounds hollow when tapped has lost its bond to the substrate. Painting over a hollow section traps moisture in the void and accelerates failure. On lime render, a hollow section eventually blows.

Structural cracks in lime render are repaired with lime-compatible filler; gypsum and sand-cement fillers are incompatible with lime and crack out within one winter cycle. For combined exterior programmes including joinery, see our exterior painting page.

Render-Only Programmes

Masonry painting is often its own programme, separate from joinery work. Where sash windows and timber fascias are not due for repainting, we quote the masonry and render elevations as a standalone scope.

This is common on Henley conservation-area townhouses where the windows were done recently and the render is the only element cycling now. We confirm scope clearly at the quotation stage and do not extend into joinery unless specifically included.

Here’s How It Works

1. Surface identification

We distinguish lime render from sand-cement render and from modern proprietary products such as K-Rend. Visual inspection and a scratch test at an inconspicuous point confirms the type. There is no correct masonry coating without correct surface identification first.

2. Biological growth treatment

Where algae, moss, or lichen is present, we apply a biocide wash and allow adequate dwell time before any physical cleaning or surface work starts. Insufficient dwell time means roots survive and growth returns through the new coat.

3. Hollow-section and crack assessment

We tap the full elevation, mark any hollow areas, and assess all cracks. Hollow sections are repaired or agreed for repair before any coating proceeds. Structural cracks are assessed and opened out before filling with the correct material.

4. Render repair

Lime render receives lime-compatible repair material. Sand-cement render receives sand-cement compatible filler. Mixed-substrate surfaces receive the correct material in each zone. No gypsum filler on lime render.

5. Priming

Bare and repaired masonry receives a breathable masonry primer. Properties with previous film-forming paint on lime-render surfaces are assessed for delamination risk; where removal is required, this is agreed before any new product.

6. Topcoat application

Two coats of breathable masonry paint, applied in dry conditions above 5 degrees Celsius. Application windows on riverside-facing elevations in Remenham, Sonning Eye, and Lower Shiplake account for higher ambient moisture.

Masonry Painting Costs in Henley-on-Thames

Cost ranges below are starting points — final pricing depends on substrate, scope, and finish. Call 01491 529448 for a precise quote.

Masonry painting on Henley’s period stock typically costs between £900 and £9,000+, depending on property size, surface condition, and whether render repair is required.

Surface condition and repair requirement

Significant hollow sections, biological growth, or removing film-forming overpaint from lime render all add preparation time. A freshly rendered surface in good condition costs less than one needing hollow-section repair and full biological treatment.

Surface area and number of elevations

A two-elevation terrace covers less masonry than a four-elevation detached with a rear outbuilding run. Chiltern estate cottages often have additional outbuilding and boundary wall masonry on the same programme.

Coating specification

Breathable masonry coatings cost more per litre than standard masonry paint and require longer working windows. On lime render and brick-and-flint, they are the only compatible product, not an upgrade.

Trade insight

Brick-and-flint listed cottage, Hambleden (vapour-permeable coating, front and side elevations): £2,000 to £3,600. For a combined exterior programme covering masonry alongside joinery, see our exterior painting page.
